Week 9
May 2-3, 2015
In our final weekend of the season, the team put in a strong showing all around New England, registered for three events including New England Coed Sailing Championships at Salve Regina University. Unfortunately, one of the three events, the one day Mendum's Pond Invite at UNH encountered light breeze that made it impossible to sail. The sailors kept their spirits up with hamburgers and cookies, but the breeze did not cooperate, and no races were started.
The Coast Guard Alumni Bowl, which is also the New England Championship event, took place in light to medium breeze on Saturday. The team sailed well in a tight and highly competitive regatta, staying within a few points of several teams both immediately ahead and behind the team. The second day saw heavier breeze, and as a result, our heavy wind crews sailed the full day. Scott Goodrich, Katie Alfond, Laura Tchsiegg, Jackson Hamilton, Elise Gehling, Jackie Berlin, and John Hughes all sailed at the event, with Gehling putting in a particularly strong performance as the B Division skipper for most of Sunday.
Finishing in 3rd place, and only 3 points out of 2nd, the Huskies put in a excellent performance at the Southern 7, hosted by URI. Stephen Fletcher, Emily Browning, Zach Shapiro, and Claire Lockard all sailed at the event, where both divisions sailed on the same starting line at the same time. A special shoutout to Zach, who sailed his last college regatta here, and is graduating this week!
