FAQ

How do I join the team?
We hold recruitment â€‹meetings in September and February before each season. After the meeting, students try out on the Charles at a practice.

Do I need prior sailing experience?
Yes, we recommend that you have at least some racing experience prior to trying out for our team.

I am a high school sailor interested in Northeastern. Can I come meet the team?
Absolutely! Fill out the contact form so you can meet with one of the sailors from the team. We are happy to have prospective students come down and watch a practice, or visit campus to meet the coach and team.

I have been admitted to Northeastern and am hoping to sail. What is my next step?
If you have sailing experience, fill out our recruitment form if you haven't already to get in touch with Coach Farrar and our recruitment officer. If you have already been in touch with Coach Farrar, let him know that you've been accepted! If you have a sailing resume, you can pass that along when he responds. We'll keep in touch with you as the season gets closer and update you on tryout schedules.

Either way, stay tuned for announcements about recruitment meetings, and come by our table during Spring or Fall Fest to learn more about the team.

I have been admitted to Northeastern under the NUin program. What is my next step?

If you have racing experience, please fill out the recruitment form the same as is written above. Even though you will not be available for the Fall season, we would like to know that you are hoping to join in the Spring!

When do you practice?
We practice three times a week, on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 3:30 to sunset. We also have team workouts once a week, and team members are expected to attend everything their schedule permits, including a minimum of 2 practices a week to sail in regattas.

Where are regattas and what do they involve?
Most regattas are two-day events on Saturday and Sunday. Sailing is typically from 9:30-4 (ending earlier on Sundays). Many regattas are local - MIT, Harvard, Tufts, and Boston College host a multitude of regattas per season. We also travel all over New England and sometimes as far as Maryland during the regular season, with some postseason regattas taking us as far as Florida. In the fall, almost all the regattas are fleet racing, but in the spring season, roughly half of the regattas are team racing. Don't worry if you don't have any team racing experience. Many of our sailors learn how to team race for the first time in college.

How often do students sail regattas?

Almost all of our sailors are attending regattas at least every other weekend. Top sailors are competing every weekend while in season.

When does the team compete?

From the beginning of September to mid November during the fall semester, although most regattas are finished by the end of October. In the Spring, we sail from the end of February through April and sometimes into the beginning of May.

How big is the team?

The numbers vary, but we usually have between 25 and 30 active sailors each season.

How does the schedule work with co-op?

Many of our sailors compete while on co-op. To remain a member on the team, you are not required to sail while on co-op, but you must attend at least two practices a week in order to sail regattas on the weekend. The ICSA limits each sailor to 8 seasons of competition, so sailors who are on the team for 5 years have to take two seasons off from competition.
