Week 5

October 10-11, 2015

The Huskies sailed at three regattas this weekend, with two teams racing in New England and the women's team heading to the Naval Academy in Maryland.

Our women's team headed to the intersectional Navy Women's Fall regatta in Maryland this weekend, where the entire team put in a strong performane against some of the best women's teams in the country. A special shoutout to Tori McGruer and Laura Tschiegg for finishing in third place in their division, and only five points out of first. Elise Gehling, Margo Blagden, Sarah de Silva, and Nathalie Garcia all also sailed well at the event in z420s and FJs, while Maddie Whittier represented the team in Lasers. Conditions were decent on the first day, before becoming light and shifty on the second day.

Jackson Hamilton, Eleanor Grams, Kurran Singh, and John Hughes sailed at the Barnett Trophy at Bowdoin in Maine this weekend, where they ended the first day in fourth place, before falling to sixth on a breezier second day. Conditions were brisk in the mornings before warming up later in the day at the current heavy venue. Races were sailed in multiple different coves, meaning the sailors had to adjust to different game plans and strategies each set.

Owen Beringer, Claire Lockard, Ian Campbell, and Rachel Guard represented the team at the Southern Series 5 hosted by Roger Williams University, where they raced at another venue where current is a major factor. Unfortunately for the A Division sailors, the first day featured a slow 180 degree shift in the wind, with the entire division on the water the whole time waiting for the breeze to settle in. Sunday had a more consistent sea breeze, allowing for a lot more racing to occur.
