October 12-13, 2013

The team sent their top sailors to the Moody (A-level Intersectional) at URI this weekend. They were welcomed with excellent racing conditions, with warm temperatures and breeze from the North East at 8-18 knots. Six races were completed in each division on the first day, with a number of solid finishes from both Maarten Eenkema van Dijk and Janelle Veary in A division and Conor Lodge and Estelle Beguin in B division. The next day sailors faced similar breeze and finished another 4 races in each division. The Huskies finished up in 12th place in A fleet and a strong 4th place in B, bringing the team up to an impressive 9th place finish.

At the Nicholas Barnett Trophy (B-level) at Bowdoin, Scott Goodrich and Taylor Williams sailed in A division, with Jesse Thomas and Laura Tschiegg in B division. Both boats slipped compared to previous weekends, but wound up in 8th place out of 12 as a team, with A division finishing in 7th place and B division in 8th place.

The Huskies took second place at the Protest Trophy at Bates. They sailed in combined divisions agaist 5 other schools, and completed a total of 3 races in difficult, shifty winds. Matteo Alampi and Eleanor Grams were 2nd in A division, with Evan Gregory and Sasha Zhmakina finishing 3rd in B division, good for a 2nd place finish overall.

The womens team had a long trip down to Annapolis to compete at the Navy Fall Womens regatta. It was a chilly and rainy weekend, with breeze from 6-12 knots on Saturday and 6-16 knots on Sunday. They completed 10 races on the first day, heading in as the breeze died around 4 pm. Elise Gehling and Kristen Kuzil, sailing A division in FJ's secured a first place finish, helping their scores improve. Heidi Hood and Margo Blagden sailed strongly in B division in 420s, as did Camille Matile in the singlehand Laser Radial division. On Sunday, Hood and Blagden continued to sail well, securing a number of midfleet finishes. Tasha Greenwood took over the singlehand fleet and got a first place finish. The ladies finished in 15th of 18 over all in the competetive fleet.

The sloop team traveled down to Larchmont, NY for the Storm Trysail Regatta, sailing in Bob Fischer's J-105 Sweet Caroline for the second straight year. 20-25 knot breezes and heavy seas greeted the team on Saturday, and over two races a couple of mistakes set them back early. Unfortunately, conditions did not let up for Sunday and the race comittee called off sailing for the day. With Colin Henderson at the helm, the crew of Luke Orchardo, Max Frye, Stephen Fletcher and Emily Browning picked up 10th in their class.

At Roger Williams the team raced in the Southern Series 4. Becker Awqatty and Linnea Goldstein raced in A division with Tori McGruer and Lindsay Martinez in B division. Awqatty and Goldstein were 12th in their division, while McGruer and Martinez were 11th in B, bringing the team to a 12th place finish overall.
