October 6-7, 2012

It was an exciting weekend for the Huskies, travelling to regattas in Maine, New York and Maryland.

The women headed to Navy to compete in their most competitive regatta of the season. Races were sailed in three divisions of 420s, FJs and Radials. Heavy winds on Saturday meant a full, tiring rotation was sailed without having to race at all on Sunday. Heidi Hood sailed A division with Taylor WilliamsElise Gehling and Estelle Beguin were in B division, and Tasha Greenwood sailed the Laser Radial in C division. NU may have been 15th of 16 in each division, but they stayed competitive in one of the toughest women's regattas in the ICSA.

At the Barnett TrophyMaarten Eenkema van Dijk skippered A division with â€‹crews Linnea Goldstein and Becker Awqatty, with Jesse Thomas skippering B division with Kristen Kuzil and Zach Shapiro. Eenkema van Dijk led the team to 6th of 12 overall with 4th in A division.

Awqatty and Shapiro also sailed at the Protest Trophy hosted by Bates on Sunday. Along with crews Forest Franzose and Lukas Scott, the Huskies finished 2nd out of 5 overall.

On the big boat side of things, Northeastern sent its sloop team down to Larchmont, NY for the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta, the biggest college regatta in the world. They were lucky enough to be hosted by a Northeastern parent, Bob Fischer on his J 105, "Sweet Caroline." Also on board was Jeff Condon, NU Sailing Class of 2010! Scott Goodrich skippered with a crew of Colin Henderson, Luke OrchardoMax Frye and Evan Gregory. Saturday brought winds of 10-15 knots in the morning that increased well above 20, with some gusts close to 30. The crew handled the breeze well, working downwind boat speed up to 14 knots in the last race of the day! The Huskies were 8th of 10 in the J 105 division, but were only 5 points out of 4th place. Some big mistakes hurt the team in the first two races, which was tough to recover from in a 4 race regatta. However they still sailed well and had a great time at a well-organized event that Northeastern plans to return to next year!
